FINAL SUBMISSION_ EXP 2

The space between: Anzac parade tram stop
"Rail Hive"

The Client:

The NSW Government is extending the current light rail to the eastern suburbs, the plans state its position as adjacent to the main uni mall. the demographic is for the local public and also the university students and academics. thus a large amount of people will need to use the stop, for both arriving and departing.

Concept 1: Order and Disorder: Peter Eisenman

Eisenman's Architecture plays with ordered constraints by cutting through  an architectural grid by disruptively responding to the context to create the illusion of disorder.
Interpreting this my model lies institute with the university mall, breaking the grid of adjacent buildings to Anzac parade. While the tracks cut through the grid parallel to Anzac parade. thus creating a Disorderred order.

Concept 2: Opposition of Heavy and Light: Aldo Van Eyck

Eyck opposes heavy and light flipping standard conventions around to make heavy elements float and light support.

Interpreting this my model has suspended elements such as the Honeycomb awnings that appear floating.  accompanied by heave elements sitting above the ground.

ElectroLiquid Amalgamation:

“Why still speak of the real and the virtual, the material and immaterial? Here these categories are not in opposition, or in some metaphysical disagreement, but more in an electroliquid aggregation, enforcing each other, as in a two part adhesive.”'

-Lars Spuybroek, 1998.

The illusion of heavy and light elements as separate entities combines to create a sense of order to serve a purpose as an UN-obtrusive gateway to the new light rail, while Eismans idea of breaking the grid is Utilized to keep the previous infrastructure usable.

Theme: Sustainability

The future of Architecture needs to head towards sustainable design above all else.
to meet this demand I set out to make my design sustainable in all aspects.

To save on  Material I used the Eden project as inspiration, the Eden project consists of a honeycomb structure soap bubble shaped dome used to save on material.

Thus the awnings of my Design mimicked this material saving design, while also utilizing a cable support system to elevate them above the platform.

the Standard light rail sits on the ground plain, but this has a large impact on the existing infrastructure,  thus by elevating my Light rail stop, the busy road below remains the same and also bus access isn't impeded. meaning that no additional infrastructure is needed.

The landscape also extends onto the tram stop allowing for seating space for commuters and students.

While predominantly being made of wood which is a highly sustainable material.

to play into the surrounding environment  two elements have been transformed into louver systems. these block noise from the road while also allowing the view of university mall to remain intact as commuters drive past.

Textures:
 Chosen Textures:

Light: Natural order
a progression of natural structure.

 Medium: Environmental Beauty
a development of Environmental synchronization

Dark: Geometric tangle:
a movement of Geometric patterns into a amalgamated pattern

The Final Design: "Rail Hive"

Rail Hive combines the Brief to create an unobtrusive transport hub that floats above Anzac parade, while also meeting a sustainable criteria to fit in line with current day Architectural motives.

Image 1: Aerial View
the Light rail track cuts through the grid while intersection planes combine heavy and light elements to create a sense of order.

Image 2:North bound Anzac parade:
the structure flows into the landscape while heavy platforms sit elevated above the ground. the pre-existing Bus stop remains beneath while added seating areas allow for commuters to wait or rest.

Image 3: University mall Facade
the building flows on from the university mall. the main path ways cut through the tram stop, allowing unimpeded flow. While the landscape is transformed up the sides to allow an alternate seating area.
